A Guide to Kitchen Curtains

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to give your kitchen a new look, why not add some kitchen curtains?

The most common types of kitchen curtains are either regular voile curtains, roman blinds or cafe style curtains. This is because it isn’t practical to have long curtains hanging around your sink or pulled back so they are bunched to the side of the widows taking up a lot of space.

If you’re going to be buying a new kitchen curtain it is imperative that you know the curtains will most likely get dirtier than curtains in other rooms in the house.

This is because kitchen windows are usually placed above or beside the sink so splashes of dirt and food can easily find their way onto your brand new kitchen curtains. Also because the oil used in cooking can permeate into things like curtain fabrics, this is the reason why slat blinds can get a greasy feel to them.

Since they can get easily dirty you should ensure the curtains that you do buy are specifically suited for kitchens and can be washed with ease regularly.

Light cream curtains and whites are a popular colour choice for kitchens because they can look stunning, clean and crisp and give a modern contemporary home that little something special. The unfortunate thing about it is they show the dirt much more easily than darker shades.

The tier and café style curtains are a very popular choice for many people. These types of curtains have a top and bottom piece to them and hung with a gap in the middle to let light in and see out the window. You can opt to have a longer valance – top piece – that overlaps the bottom curtain so the window is completely blocked.

Kitchen Valances are small curtains which are hung at the top of the window frame, almost like a little frill. A kitchen valance looks similar to a bedding valance.

Roman Blinds

These are the same as you would have in any room of the house, the roman blinds can be lifted and lowered by pulling an attached cord, the fabric then folds neatly at the top of the window into big pleats. When lowered the fabric is completely straight and flat.

Many kitchen curtains are hung with simple curtain wire between the window frames. But if you want to give them an extra special look you could use a fancy curtain rod and finials. Just make sure you’ve got enough room to install the curtain rod properly.
