65Choosing your Wedding Photographer
For me, one of the most important aspects of planning a wedding would be choosing the right wedding photographer. Their images are going to be with you for the rest of your life and if you're not happy with how they turn out, you can't do a thing to change it, unless you want to re-stage your whole wedding again!
The best and most reliable way to choose a photographer is to see a comprehensive portfolio of their work. I'm not just talking about their very best images which they have displayed on their website, I mean asking to see real examples from weddings which they have recently shot. By seeing the entire wedding shoot, you'll be able to get a good feel for what their style is, instead of looking at a selected few images.
For me personally, I like photojournalistic candid style images, I'm not one to sit and pose for hours in front of the camera, I would rather the photographer work unobtrusively in the background taking real life pictures. You'll never see me and my partner with my veil covering our heads having a cheesy kiss!
This is the kind of things to look out for when choosing your wedding photographer. Think what kind of pictures you think you might like and browse their portfolio to see if they have already taken something similar.
The other aspect of wedding photography which I really love is post editing with Photoshop. I love some of the effects that can be done in a lab with black and white and vivid colors. So if you like that sort of thing, then check to make sure your photographer knows how to edit their photos.
What's Included in your Photography Package
You need to make sure you check with your prospective photographers as to what is included in their photography package. For instance, the package might only cost $1000 but do you get any printed photos in an album? Does the photographer come and take photos of the bride and groom getting ready? How many locations will the photographer travel to? Does it include reception coverage and cutting of the cake?
Always make sure you get a contract that outlines all these details with a fixed price. It's a good idea to book your photographer at least a year in advance, especially if your wedding is in peak wedding season. The benefit about signing a contract so far in advance as you can usually hold your price, so if they put their prices up in the future, you are already locked in at the lower price.
The most important thing to remember is do your research, look at tons of their images and make sure it's recent stuff. If the photographer hasn't taken any images that you want in the past, then it's a good possibility that they won't take them for your wedding either.
